i so far have only really experienced utena through sailormoonsub/sailormoonlivetweet’s liveblogs of the series but the milkshake duel still haunts me to this day. hundred and hundreds of milkshakes out on the dueling grounds just sitting there, and anthy’s guzzling them down while utena and kozue fight to the death.

they’re obviously a symbol for something. i know jack shit about utena but like. based on the aforementioned liveblog posts. i think what is happening is like. kozue and her brother miki have a bizarre nightly ritual where kozue bugs her brother to go make milkshakes late at night. so the milkshakes, with that detail in mind, are probably supposed to represent kozue’s weird obsession with her brother. i guess shit hits the fan in the episode that makes kozue target and try to kill anthy out of jealousy that she may steal her brother or some shit, so anthy just being off to the side while the fight goes on, drinking all the milkshakes, is meant to symbolize that fear kozue has of anthy taking her brother away, since the things anthy is drinking are the things representing kozue’s relationship with her brother. knowing how anthy Lives For The Drama though and is always running around trying to cause chaos among the students for her own entertainment, it’s likely that the milkshakes are literally there and not just symbolism, and that anthy somehow learned about the weird nightly milkshakes thing and deliberately set up the rows upon rows of milkshakes in preparation for the duel and spends the duration of said duel drinking them all right in front of kozue’s face specifically so that she can taunt kozue and get her riled up.

and that’s my take on the dumb milkshakes thing as someone who has never actually watched utena outside of the first four episodes.
